Coronavirus : An Introduction

Coronavirus is big group of viruses that cause illness ranging from common cold to more severe disease like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Coronavirus was first founded in 1937 from an infectious bronchitis virus in birds. And Human Coronavirus was founded in 1960 for very first time.

Over the last 70 years, scientists have found that coronaviruses can infect mammals (mice, rats, dogs, cats, turkeys, horses, pigs, and cattle). Recently, identified coronavirus outbreak in China is a mutated and advanced form of previous coronavirus.

What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus looks like crown and has been name on its crown-like projections on. “Corona” in Latin means “halo” or “crown.”

Coronavirus can cause flu like symptoms. In humans, infection most often occurs during the winter months and patient can get fever with cold who is infected with coronavirus.

Symptoms

  • sneezing
  • a runny nose
  • malaise
  • a cough
  • fever
  • a sore throat
  • asthma

There is no cure, so treatments include taking care of yourself and over-the-counter (OTC) medication and preventive measures:

  • Rest and avoid overexertion.
  • Drink enough water.
  • Avoid smoking and smoky areas.

The virus responsible can be diagnosed by taking a sample of respiratory fluids, such as mucus from the nose, or blood.

Types

There are currently seven recognized types of coronavirus that can infect humans.

  • 229E (alpha coronavirus)
  • NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
  • OC43 (beta coronavirus)
  • HKU1 (beta coronavirus)

A dangerous new strain(founded in 2019) started circulating, but it does not yet have an official name. Health authorities are currently referring to it as 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCov).

Transmission

Researches are going on coronavirus mode of transmission, yet is believed that the virus transmit using secreted fluid from the respiratory system.

It can spread in the following ways:

  • Coughing and sneezing without covering the mouth
  • Touching or shaking hands with a infected person
  • Touching your nose, eyes, or mouth without washing or sanitizing your hands.

Highly advisable for people, who are not infected, to stay home and use all kind of preventive treatment and maintain good hygiene.

So far no vaccine is currently available for 2019-nCov. However, scientists have replicated the virus. This could allow for early detection and treatment in people who have the virus but are not yet showing symptoms.
