Lohri a festival of bonfire, a festival of belief that the flames of the Lohri bonfire carry the prayers of the people to the Sun God to bring warmth to the planet to help crops grow. In exchange, the Sun God blesses the land and ends the days of cold, bringing back life to full bloom.
People gather around bonfires to celebrate the end of winter solstice. The word Lohri is derived from two words rewari (jaggery) and til (sesame), which are traditionally eaten during the festival.
Lohri marks the beginning of summer season and also marks the beginning of harvest season. Rabi crop becomes ready by this time to be harvested. Predominantly celebrated in the Punjab and other northern parts of India.
People sing and dance around the bonfire. Gachak (mixture of peanuts and jaggery in solid state), Rewari and Peanuts are the main snacks served. They are also dropped in bonfire as bonfire offering. This festival is also considered auspicious for new born babies and newly wedded couples.
This celebration ends with a dinner in which the famous delicacies like ‘Sarson da Saag’ and ‘Makke de Roti’ are served.
The famous Lohri folk song:
Sunder mundriye ho!
Tera kaun vicharaa ho!
Dulla Bhatti walla ho!
Dullhe di dhee vyayae ho!
Ser shakkar payee ho!
Kudi da laal pathaka ho!
Kudi da saalu paata ho!
